John Silva wins the Maselli & Sons @ Petaluma

By Harlan Osborne
PETALUMA, CA—Sept.18—It happens in almost every sport. Athletes get on a hot streak and become unbeatable or they get cold and can’t do anything right. Some say its luck others call it momentum but regardless of its moniker when someone’s on a roll like Late Model racer John Silva of Fremont has been over the last four races all anyone can do is stand back and admire the beauty of perfection as a packed and appreciative grandstand did last Saturday night watching Silva lead a stellar field of Late Model competitors from start to finish to claim his record-stretching fifth victory in Petaluma Speedway’s 31st Annual M. Maselli & Sons Late Model Classic.

Coming off a three-race winning streak to close out the Speedway’s All-Pro Racing Series season Silva was in top form as 23 entries, coming from as far south as Corona, Torrance, and El Segundo, challenged for a share of the $12,000 purse and its $2000 top prize.

A second place finish in his heat earned Silva a spot in the trophy dash where a lucky draw put him in the front row and an eventual victory which assured the former two-time Petaluma track champion a front row start in the 35-lap feature next to 2010 Petaluma Speedway champion Jeff Decker, of Morgan Hill, who was aiming for a record-tying third straight Maselli Classic win.

Silva outgunned Decker at the start and retained the advantage on a pair of Lap 3 restarts, but after that, with the race running all green for the final 32 laps, he began to distance himself from the field while Decker, Santa Rosa’s Anthony Restad, Mike Kirby of Torrance, and Watsonville’s Clay Daly, competed closely for second place. After 21 laps around the 3/8-mile adobe oval Silva upped the ante by getting into lapped traffic before racing unchallenged to the finish where he took the checkered flag 2.2 seconds ahead of Decker who pocketed $1000 for second. Kirby, who grabbed third place from Restad on Lap 28, collected $850, Restad took home $700 for fourth place, and Kirby banked $600 for fifth place. Rounding out the top 10 were Rob Sanders and John Lowry, both of Bakersfield, Dean DeVolder of Pacifica, Rick Shafer of Vacaville, and Richard Papenhausen of Chico.

Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas led every lap of the B-main to earn a transfer spot to the feature along with Shafer, Nick Bartels of El Segundo, Lowry, and Papenhausen. Heat race triumphs went to Dino Napier and Tom Malcolm, both of Corona, and Novato’s Rod Arnold.
