Hogge Leads Wire-to-Wire For $3,000 at Nationals Finale at Santa Maria

SANTA MARIA, CA (May 26) – Bobby Hogge IV led wire-to-wire in “The Nationals Presented by Coors Light” finale becoming the fifth West Coast Late Model Shootout winner in just in as many races, extending his series-leading wins list to eight. Twenty-three cars checked in for the $3,000 to win and $300 to start event.

Mike Johnson and Hogge led the field to the green flag for 40 laps of racing. Hogge got the jump when the green flag dropped with Johnson taking second and Bakersfield’s Rob Sanders in third. Tony Toste and Tucson, Arizona’s RC Whitwell battled for fourth until the action came to a stop on lap eight for series’ point’s leader Nick Bartels.

When racing resumed Johnson battled for second with Sanders and made contact with the backstretch wall bringing him to a stop in turn four. He visited the hot lane and rejoined the field, charging his way towards the front as soon as green flag conditions began. His progress forward came to a halt on lap 14 for previous night’s winner Brad Pounds. Whitwell visited the hot lane under caution and joined the back of the field.

Hogge put a comfortable distance between himself and Sanders. Toste pulled Sanders within striking distance but could not make the pass. Behind them Johnson powered his way into fourth place by lap 26 before his night came to an end bringing out a second caution. Torrance’s Mike Kirby found himself in fourth place and Whitwell had maneuvered his way back into the top five.

Bobby Hogge went uncontested the final laps with Rob Sanders, Tony Toste, Mike Kirby, Steve Drake, RC Whitwell, Clay Daly, Tommy Malcolm, Larry Childress and Chris Barnett completing the top ten.
