Brad Pounds $3000 Winner @ The Bud Nationals

The 26th annual Budweiser Nationals came to a close on Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway with Brad Pounds standing in victory lane claiming the $3,000 West Coast Shootout winner’s check. The West Coast Shootout Championship was also on the line with Clay Daly holding a thirteen point lead over Nick Bartels going into the feature event. Bartels put together a strong run but in the end was not enough with Daly edging Bartels by ten points for the title.Jason Papich and Rob Sanders let the field to the initial green flag but could not get the race started. The first restart was called back with the second as well when Jason Papich got sideways in front of John Lowery who ran over the front end. The incident ended Papich’s night and put Lowery as the new pole sitter alongside Sanders. Sanders got the jump when action was underway with Lowery and Mike Kirby filling in the top three. Brad Pounds battled with Hollister’s Andy Obertello for fourth place. Obertello broke free from Pounds and went under Kirby in turn three to take over third place. The first caution of the night was brought out on lap ten as the race leaders approached lapped traffic. Larry Childress went to high in turn four and spun out. The action heated up when racing resumed with Mike Johnson trying to move below Kirby. At the same time Hogge moved to the top and moved past Kirby. In front of them Pounds broke into the top three with a pass by Obertello with Hogge following. Lowery closed in on Sanders and took over the lead on lap sixteen exiting turn two. Pounds was able to get by Sanders as well as Hogge just a few laps later. With lapped traffic in view Lowery went into turn three and spun himself out of the lead. Pounds inherited the lead for the restart with Hogge choosing the high line putting Sanders below. Sanders got the jump on the start and battled with Hogge before pulling away exiting turn four. With three laps to go, Pounds had a straight away lead when Tommy Malcolm brought out the final caution of the night. Pounds went uncontested the final laps with Sanders holding onto second place.“Winning the modified main event was a relief,” stated Pounds in victory lane. Pounds held off Bobby Hogge on the last lap to win the modified main worth $2,500. Hogge crossed the line in third with Nick Bartels, Mike Johnson, Clay Daly, Devin Crockett, Jason Selvidge, Chris Barnett and Rob Mayea rounding out the top ten.
