Bobby Hogge IV Wins Night One of Budweiser Nationals

Bobby Hogge IV picked up where he left off at Bakersfield Speedway for the 26th Annual Budweiser Nationals featuring the West Coast Shootout Late Model series. The Salinas native swept the 25th annual Budweiser Nationals and found himself back in victory lane on night one. Twenty-seven drivers checked in with only twenty-two making the feature event that awarded $2,000 to the top spot.

Bakersfield's John Lowery and Bobby Hogge led the field to the green flag for thirty laps of racing. The duo went side by side through one and two and drag raced down the backstretch with Hogge taking the lead in turns three and four. Once clear, Hogge checked out until an early race caution was brought out on lap three when Larry Childress found himself in the turn three wall ending his night. The caution set up the first Deleware restart of the night with point's leader Clay Daly passing fast time qualifier Jason Selvidge for fourth place in turn two. The following set of turns Daly dove to the bottom and moved into third place past Restad. On lap five Jason Papich brought out a caution when he came to a stop facing the wrong direction on the backstretch ending his night. On the restart Jason Selvidge moved above Clay Daly and made the pass in turns three and four. Daly fought back the following turn and took back the spot with Selvidge coming to a stop on the backstretch with a flat left rear tire.

Torrance's Mike Kirby took advantage of the restart passing Restad in turn four and Nick Bartels followed. Approaching lapped traffic Lowery closed in on Hogge for the lead while Kirby closed in on Daly. Hogge diced his way through lapped traffic and Lowery stayed on his back bumper. Exiting turn four on lap seventeen the two made contact trying to avoid lapped traffic forcing Lowery to check up and spin out of second place. Behind them Kirby moved past Daly and now found himself in second place. Nick Bartels capitalized on the restart beating Daly out of turn two. The following lap Tony Toste brought out a caution as he spun in turn three. Hollister's Andy Obertello found himself sitting in the top five for the first time in the night and battled with Daly when racing resumed. The two went side by side until Obertello pulled away exiting turn two. A late race caution set up a four lap shootout with Hogge going uncontested for the win.

"I laid the right rear on the bit of cushion. I know Kirby was on the bottom and I ran the middle to try to keep momentum to repeat a Bud Nationals sweep," stated Hogge in victory lane. Following the Super Late Model feature Hogge won the Modified preliminary event giving him the pole for tonight's feature putting him one step closer to a complete sweep in both divisions.

Behind Hogge, Kirby held on for second place with Nick Bartels, Andy Obertello, Clay Daly, Rob Sanders, Anthony Restad, Rob Mayea, Jason Selvidge and Devin Crockett rounded out the top ten.

Night two of the Budweiser Nationals will decide the 2011 West Coast Shootout Late Model Series championship. Going into the night Clay Daly holds a 13 point lead over Nick Bartels. Gates will open at 4:30 with racing beginning at 5:30. Tickets are $17 for adults and only $5 for children.
